  Five people, including two sets of parents, died while trying to rescue a struggling swimmer in an Ohio river on Sunday night, July 19.   A group of five adults, two children, and another individual was out on the Scioto River to “enjoy themselves a summer night” of fishing when the tragedy unfolded, Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer said at a conference on Monday, July 20.   At some point, one adult went into the water to swim and began struggling, prompting two other adults to dive in to try to save them. After the pair also began to struggle, another two adults went in to help, Balzer explained.   None of them made it out of the river alive.   Authorities rushed to the scene after a motorist noticed a “clearly distraught” young child running along a nearby road around 9 p.m. and called 911.   The terrified child said that his “family was in the river,” cops said.      Two women were then pulled from the river and taken to nearb...

  US President Donald Trump has signed executive orders imposing new 50 percent tariffs on a wide range of Canadian goods, accusing Ottawa of discriminating against American products, including alcohol, automobiles and dairy. The White House said the new tariffs will take effect in 30 days and will apply to products such as wine, hockey sticks and cement. Trump invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to impose the duties, marking the first known use of the provision. The move comes after several of his previous tariff measures were struck down by the US Supreme Court earlier this year. The latest tariffs will not apply to energy products, potash or goods already subject to sector-specific tariffs. However, products covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will no longer be exempt.   Sean "Diddy" Combs has asked a federal judge to sanction a woman suing him and her attorneys, arguing that their lawsuit is legally baseless and should never have been refiled. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Combs is seeking sanctions against Grace O'Marcaigh and her legal team after they filed an amended complaint despite an earlier ruling that California courts lacked personal jurisdiction over him. Diddy's lawyers argue that the amended filing simply repeated the same jurisdictional arguments that had already been rejected by the court instead of addressing the deficiencies identified by the judge. They claim O'Marcaigh and her attorneys ignored the court's ruling, forcing Combs to incur additional legal expenses defending what they describe as a meritless case.   Yemen's Iran-aligned militant group, the Houthis have announced on  that they are imposing a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia.   The House of Representatives has begun clause-by-clause consideration of President Bola Tinubu’s executive bill seeking the establishment of state police, with lawmakers indicating they may adopt the Senate-approved version with only minor amendments. Speaking during a meeting of the House Committee on Constitution Review, Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the Committee, Benjamin Kalu, said the House would build on the work already done by the Senate to fast-track passage of what he described as a priority constitutional amendment aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.  Kalu recalled that the House had earlier passed its own Constitution Alteration Bill on State Police on June 11 before proceeding on recess.   Andrew and Tristan Tate are preparing to challenge efforts to extradite them to the United Kingdom, with their lawyer saying they will fight the move. Attorney Joseph McBride told TMZ the brothers intend to contest the extradition request, arguing there are special circumstances that should prevent them from being sent back to the UK. McBride said the brothers are not a flight risk, claiming they have fully complied with court proceedings over the past three years. According to him, they have not missed any court appearances in either their Romanian human trafficking case or a defamation case in Palm Beach. He said the brothers were "startled" when plainclothes U.S. Marshals wearing badges and vests approached them during their arrest in Miami on Saturday and ordered them to put their hands behind their backs.   Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate will remain behind bars after appearing in federal court in Miami on Monday, where they formally began fighting the United Kingdom's bid to extradite the controversial brothers on dozens of charges, including rape and human trafficking.   During the brief hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis informed the brothers they were being held on a provisional arrest warrant from the U.K. and that extradition proceedings were already underway.   The judge later scheduled a status hearing for July 27 as the brothers prepare to challenge both the extradition request and whether they should remain in custody while the case moves forward.   Attorney Joseph McBride told reporters that the brothers are innocent and said he does not expect them to be released.   The US Department of Defense has officially released the identities of two American soldiers who lost their lives following Iranian military strikes targeting Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan.   The fallen service members were identified as 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, aged 25, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, aged 19. Authorities confirmed that Gonzales, originally from Carrollton, Texas, died on Friday, while Feehan enlisted out of Ewa Beach, Hawaii succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. A former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant has died, the organization announced on Instagram.   LaToya Malcolm, 35, competed in the 2024 Miss Universe Jamaica pageant and later went on to hold the 2024 Miss Jamaica Bikini International title.   "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Miss Universe Jamaica alumna LaToya Malcolm, who proudly competed in the 2024 Miss Universe Jamaica Competition," the Miss Universe Jamaica organization wrote in its statement.   "Our heartfelt condolences are with her family, friends, and loved ones. Rest peacefully, LaToya.   Two firefighters collapsed while battling a fire raging on the top floor of a three-storey residential building in the Ketu-Ikosi area of Lagos.   The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, disclosed this in a statement issued by the Lagos State Government.   The fire broke out at No. 11, Ademola Taiwo Street, Ketu-Ikosi, and was brought under control through a joint operation with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.   According to the agency, the affected property is one of a pair of twin three-storey residential buildings.   LASEMA said its Tiger Squad arrived to find the top floor engulfed in flames and immediately launched coordinated firefighting operations to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjoining building and nearby properties.   Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical surge from a prepaid meter located on the front balcony of the building before spreading to the top floor.   “Duri...

  Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has said that AI and robots will do 'so much stuff' that humans will run out of things to do for work and "we'll basically just issue money to people".   Musk painted the picture during a conversation with XPRIZE founder Peter Diamandis at the Abundance Summit.  Rather than warning that artificial intelligence will simply replace workers, Musk described a world where AI and humanoid robots become so productive that scarcity itself starts to disappear, leaving governments to rethink how people earn an income.   Musk said the explosion in AI and robotics won't simply automate repetitive work.
