Spain train crash leaves 39 dead and 179 injured

At least 39 people have reportedly died and 179 others injured after two high-speed passenger trains collided in Spain, according to preliminary media reports.

The accident occurred on Wednesday, October 28, near Urda in the province of Toledo, central Spain, involving trains operated by state-owned Renfe and private rail company Iryo.

The collision reportedly caused two carriages to derail and fall down an embankment, prompting an emergency response involving firefighters, medical teams and rescue personnel.

Spain’s rail infrastructure operator, Adif, suspended services on the high-speed railway connecting Madrid with southern Andalusia following the crash.

Initial reports indicated that one train struck the rear of another train that had stopped. However, authorities had not established the cause of the collision at the time of reporting.

Emergency services were deployed to assist passengers, while authorities continued to assess the extent of the damage and casualties.

The crash comes months after another deadly high-speed train accident near Adamuz, in southern Spain, in January 2026, which claimed dozens of lives and raised concerns about railway safety in the country.
