  Mr. Solomon Gimba has mourned his brother, a soldier killed in gun battle with bandits in Kaduna State.  Recall that eleven Nigerian soldiers were killed in an attack by suspected gunmen on a military base in Birnin Gwari LGA of the state.  The gunmen who came in large numbers on motorcycles and carrying heavy weapons including rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), invaded the base at Polwire village on Monday night April 4, and engaged the troops in a fierce gun battle. Mr Gimba, who is from Southern Kaduna, took to Facebook on Tuesday, April 5, to mourn his kid brother.  "It was a shocking news of your death my kid brother. You died in a battle field by bandits in protecting your fatherland in Kaduna state. Continue resting at master feet. Pray for my family," he wrote.    "Continue rest in peace my brother evil one cut your life short, God will surely expose them, Kaduna??? Bandit??? God bring peace in Nigeria."    ...

  A federal high court has barred the media from covering terrorism cases in the country.  The court’s Chief Information Officer, Dr Catherine Christopher said in a statement that terrorism proceedings will be conducted in secret except when the Chief Judge of the court, Justice John Tsoho, grants permission for media coverage.   Terrorism proceedings will also hold at any place to be designated by the chief judge and in the case of the Abuja Judicial Division, the venue, for the time being, would be the premises of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.   The court warned that anyone who contravenes an order or direction made under the practice directions would be deemed to have committed an offence contrary to Section 34(5) of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2011 (as amended).   Perimeters of the court sitting over a terrorism trial would be secured for the period of the trial for the safety of litigants and court officials, while distance and siz...

The United Nations General Assembly has suspended Russia from the UN Human Rights Council after high-profile allegations of atrocities committed by Russian soldiers during the war in Ukraine. The measure suspends Russia's membership in the Council and would launch a review of the matter if the UN deems it appropriate. The United States ambassador to the United Nations made a case for seeking the suspension of Russia from the Human Rights Council in front of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, something she and other UN member states have been pushing.     "Russia should not have a position of authority in a body whose purpose -- whose very purpose -- is to promote respect for human rights. The United States made history on Thursday April 7, as the Senate confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court. The Senate voted 53 to 47 to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the 116th Supreme Court justice. When sworn in this summer, Jackson will be the first Black woman to serve on the nation's high court. "This is one of the great moments of American history," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said before the vote. "Today we are taking a giant, bold and important step on the well-trodden path to fulfilling our country's founding promise. This is a great moment for Judge Jackson but it is an even greater moment for America as we rise to a more perfect union."
