British-Ghanaian rapper, Solo 45, who held four women against their will and repeatedly raped them, has had his prison sentence increased. The Grime star, whose is real name is Andy Anokye has been told he will serve an additional six years, the Court of Appeal ruled. Anokye was convicted at Bristol Crown Court of 30 charges that spanned the course of two years.These were 21 rapes, five counts of false imprisonment, two counts of assault by penetration and two of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was given a 29-year extended sentence, made up of a 24-year jail term and an extended licence period of five years, in July last year. Following a hearing on Friday, senior judges concluded the sentence was "unduly lenient" and increased it to 35 years - with a 30-year jail term and five years additional licence. Ugandan opposition presidential candidate, Bobi Wine has taken to Twitter to raise an alarm over a military siege at his home as the country waits for results following Thursday's election. The singer turned-politician, who is hoping to unseat President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, had earlier tweeted about  'widespread fraud and violence experienced across the country' during the election. In his tweets on Friday January 15, he wrote:  'None of these military intruders is talking to us. We are in serious trouble. We are under siege.' 'We are under siege. The military has jumped over the fence and has now taken control of our home, he added. 

Wayne Rooney has retired from football at 35 after being appointed as permanent manager of Derby County on a two-and-a-half-year contract until the summer of 2023. The Kenyan police has been granted an order of detaining a woman whose lover died during coitus at his house in Dandora, Nairobi. It was gathered that Joyce Warimu's lover fainted and died instantly while on the act. After police searched his house, they found assorted drugs and medical reports. Josephat Wafula, the detective who is following up on the matter told a court in Makadara that they are also waiting for the suspect’s medical report and autopsy of the deceased. Joyce Wairimu will now be detained for 14 days after the court granted the prosecution team's request.  The woman who is being investigated for suspected murder will be held at Kayole Police Station.

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved for private and public schools in the state to resume from Monday, January 18, 2021. The decision was reached after "due consultations" with stakeholders, including Governors, Commissioners of Education, Proprietors and heads of institutions, staff unions and students. Director General, Office of the Education Quality Assurance, OEQA, of the state Ministry of Education, Mrs Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, in a statement on Friday, Jan 15, said the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo urged all school managers to enforce strict compliance with all subsisting protocols to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Oyo state on Thursday led the rest of Nigeria in the record single day deaths caused by COVID-19 complications. Out of the 23 deaths announced by the NCDC for the country, 10 occurred in Oyo. The fatalities shot the state’s death toll to 64, from 54 on Wednesday. Since February last year, the state has recorded 4,570 cases, making it the fifth on the grim leaderboard in the country. The state, as at Thursday, has 540 active cases, with 3,966 discharged. Lagos recorded six deaths, two more than it logged on Wednesday. The state’s death toll has now hit 266. Other states which recorded deaths on Thursday were Rivers, Edo, Ogun, Plateau and Sokoto.

An upcoming Nollywood actress, Sotonye Green, has died. Her friend and colleague, Debby King, who announced her passing on social media, revealed that Green died on Monday, January 11 after battling COVID19 at the Yaba Isolation center.     A devastated Debby also shared a video where she accused the management of the center of sharp practices while her friend was being treated until her death.   She said Please if you know anyone who has COVID, they should stay home, self isolate and treat themselves. Martins Idakpini, the lance corporal who was arrested and detained for criticising chief of army staff Tukur Buratai, has been granted bail after 7 months in detention.  The soldier was arrested and detained in Abuja after a video which was made in June 2020 went viral. In the video, he accused Buratai of poorly managing the fight against insurgency.  Idakpini's lawyer, Tope Akinyode said a court martial sitting in Sokoto ordered his release on bail.  Akinyode said in a statement issued on Thursday January 14.  Read below..   “Court martial grants bail to Lance Corporal Martins Idakpini. Victor Osimhen has tested positive for coronavirus for a second time.  The Napoli and Super Eagles striker was first diagnosed with the disease upon his return to his club from holiday earlier in the month.  In a tweet by the Italian club yesterday, the club confirmed the 22-year-old striker returned another positive COVID-19 result and would undergo further tests in a few days. “The COVID-19 test taken by Victor #Osimhen this morning has come back positive. He’ll be tested again over the coming days,” the club said.  

Italian media tycoon and former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi has been hospitalized in Monaco after suffering heart problems.  Berlusconi's personal doctor, Alberto Zangrillo said he was hospitalised on Thursday January 14, 'at the Cardiothoracic Hospital in Monaco for tests.' 'He will return home within a few days', he told AFP news agency. Alberto said he had made an urgent visit to the former prime minister at his home in the south of France on Monday because of an irregular heart beat and decided to transfer him to a hospital. The 84-year-old has battled multiple health issues in recent years, undergoing heart surgery in 2016 and has also survived prostate cancer. Back in September, he was hospitalised with Covid-19 after developing double pneumonia following a visit to Sardinia. He was treated for more than a week at Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital.   Joe Biden, the President-elect of the United States of America, has appointed Nigerian-born Funmi Olorunnipa Badejo into his cabinet. The President-elect made announcement when he named additional 20 members of the office of the White House counsel. Badejo is a lawyer and an alumna of Berkeley Law College in the US, and served as ethics counsel in the same office toward the end of the President Barrack Obama administration. She, alongside other lawyers of the Office of White House Counsel will be advising the President, the executive office of the president, and the White House staff on legal issues pertaining to the president and the White House.   The management of the University of Ibadan, UI, has fixed Monday, January 18 for resumption and cancelled the 2019/2020 academic session. The announcement came as the Senate of the apex institution approved a new calendar on Thursday. The school will be resuming on Monday to complete the 2018/19 session which did not end before the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU embarked on strike last year. The 2019/2020 academic session of the school has been cancelled while those admitted to that session will be migrated to 2020/2021 academic session. According to the institution, the 2020/2021 academic session would now begin on 20 February and end on 2 December, 2021.

The Federal Government has said that there is no going back on the January 18 resumption date for schools across the country. Last week, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, announced that the government was reviewing the January 18 date due to the increasing numbers of confirmed COVID19 cases in the country. However, a statement released by Ben Bem Goong, the spokesperson of the Ministry today January 14, says the Minister after reaching a consensus with Governors, Commissioners, and other stakeholders in the education sector, agreed that it was okay that the schools should be re-opened. Goong said schools are expected to comply with COVID-19 protocols, especially strict adherence to non-pharmaceutical procedures liked wearing of face masks, social distancing and others. A 34- year- old man identified simply as Kevwe has committed suicide in Delta State, by drinking a poisonous substance over his inability to raise money to treat an undisclosed ailment.   The incident occurred on Thursday, January 14, at about 12.00noon near the ever-busy Olympia Cinema, Abeke by Adeola road, Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of the state.  The victim, said to be a commercial tricycle rider was taken to a private clinic where he was confirmed dead.      It was gathered that the father of two suffered from an undisclosed ailment since 2020 and was informed by doctors to raise N170, 000 before 27th January to enable him to commence treatment.   An earthquake on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has killed at least seven people and injured hundreds on Friday morning, January 15. According to reports, more than a dozen patients and staff are reported to be trapped in the rubble of a hospital that was damaged in the quake. Authorities said four people died in Majene and more than 600 were injured, while another three people died in neighbouring Mamuju. Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies on the so-called Ring of Fire - a line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions on the Pacific rim.     The earthquake which had magnitude of  6.2 came just hours after an earlier, smaller quake. The epicentre of Friday's earthquake was six kilometres (3.73 miles) northeast of Majene city and had a depth of 10 kilometres. Authorities of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) has shut down its campus after some students and staff tested positive for COVID-19. According to a statement released by the student union of the institution, the provost of the college has ordered everyone to vacate the campus today Friday, January 15 for two weeks.
