Actress Glynis John has died at the age of 100.   The British actress was popular for her role as a suffragette who reconnects with her children thanks to a magical nanny in the blockbuster 1964 movie musical “Mary Poppins.”   Johns, a versatile film and stage veteran who won a Tony Award in 1973 for her role in the Stephen Sondheim musical "A Little Night Music" and was nominated for an Oscar for the 1960 film "The Sundowners," died of natural causes at an assisted living facility in the Los Angeles area, said her manager, Mitch Clem.   She appeared in dozens of films in a movie career that spanned more than 60 years but her role in "Mary Poppins" as Winifred Banks, the distracted suffragette mother who seems to care more about her cause than her two children, was the one for which she will be most remembered.     Johns also played a flirtatious mermaid in "Miranda" (1948), and then appeared in dual roles in the 1954 mermaid sequel...

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has said he will be happy if Egypt crash out in the group stages of the AFCON 2023   Star player, Mohamed Salah is away with Egypt for the tournament in Ivory Coast which will start on January 13.  If Egypt and Japan impress at the AFCON and Asian nations cup respective tournaments, that could mean Salah and Endo will not be back until the second week in February.   Speaking about the absence of the two players, Klopp said he sent them on their way this week without wishing them too much success. “I said if I wish you good luck it would be a lie,” Klopp said ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup third-round tie at Arsenal on Sunday   “From a personal point of view, I would be happy if they go out in the group stage but that’s probably not possible. American Fugitive Nicholas Rossi has been extradited from Scotland to the US following a long legal battle amid heavy sexual assault allegations.   Scottish ministers signed an order in September last year giving permission for Nicholas Rossi, 36, to be extradited, following a lengthy case in the Scottish courts.   Rossi had claimed he had been the victim of mistaken identity – telling courts he is an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight. But a police officer found he was Nicholas Rossi, and the appeal against extradition was dismissed in December, removing all obstacles towards extradition.  A spokesperson for Police Scotland said on Friday, December 5: “We assisted partner agencies with the extradition of a 36-year-old man.” Rossi is wanted in the US for allegedly raping a woman in Utah in 2008 and also faces a number of domestic abuse charges. Former US president, Donald Trump's legal team has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to invalidate the Colorado Supreme Court's ruling disqualifying him from that state's GOP primary ballot. In the 43-page filing, Trump's lawyers contend that "in our system of 'government of the people, by the people, [and] for the people,' Colorado’s ruling is not and cannot be correct."  "This Court should grant certiorari to consider this question of paramount importance, summarily reverse the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling, and return the right to vote for their candidate of choice to the voters," the appeal states.   The Colorado Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on Dec. 19 marked the first time a challenge to Trump’s candidacy under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment was successful.   In the split 4-3 decision, a majority of Colorado's seven justices said the former president was ineligible to appear on the state’s primary ballot in 2024 be...

  The U.S. military has confirmed a drone strike in Baghdad killed an Iraqi militia leader blamed for attacks against American forces in the country, according to a senior U.S. official.     It comes as growing regional tensions from the conflict in Gaza threaten to spread across borders, igniting a regional war in the Middle East.     The Popular Mobilisation Force (PMF) said its deputy head of operations in Baghdad Mushtaq Taleb al-Saidi was killed in the strike.     The group is linked to Iraq's armed forces, but the government in Baghdad has only limited control over its activities.      The American official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the strike targeted a leader of Harakat al Nujaba, a Shia militia that forms part of the PMF, without naming the individual.     Iraq's foreign ministry condemned the attack.      'Iraq reserves its right to take a firm stance and take all m...

Sunderland footballer, Jack Diamond allegedly raped and sexually assaulted a woman he met on Tinder after she agreed to cuddle with him in bed, a court has been told.     The 23-year-old winger is on trial accused of attacking the woman after he invited her to his house in the northeast town of Washington in 2022.   Newcastle Crown Court heard that the woman told police she messaged a friend following the alleged assaults, fearing that Diamond was contacting his housemate and fellow player about a threesome.      The court was told that when the pair got into bed, while 'it started with cuddling, it became clear that Jack Diamond wanted more'.   Mr. Povall said the woman 'eventually' consented to some sexual activity, and woke up sometime later to Diamond 'caressing her'.   'She asked him to stop and told him she wasn't in the mood, but he persisted,' Mr Povall told jurors.     The court heard Diamond allegedly sexual...

Hamas Deputy Leader Saleh Al-Arouri has been killed in a drone strike that hit the group’s office in Southern Beirut, according to reports. Israel has continued its attack on Gaza since 7 October 2023 when Hamas militants attacked Israel, causing about 1,200 deaths. Over 20,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the Israeli invasion.   According to Lebanon’s state media on Tuesday, January 2, the Hamas office was the target of the drone attack in southern Beirut. Mr Al-Arouri and at least three others were killed in the attack.  The 57-year-old leader had served several terms in Israeli jails and was released in March 2010 as part of efforts to reach a larger prisoner swap for Gilad Shalit, an Israel Defense Force (IDF) corporal kidnapped by Hamas in 2006. Al-Arouri was later involved in negotiating the deal that led to the release of more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails in return for the freeing of Shalit in 2011.
