Former “Riverdale” actor Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the first 14 years, after admitting to murdering his mother and also plotting to assassinate Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.   The 24-year-old actor was handed the sentence more than six months after he pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge for the March 2020 killing of his mother, Barbara Waite, 64, whom he shot in the back of the head as she played the piano.   Justice Kathleen Ker of British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver who passed the judgement, described the case as tragic, heartbreaking and “life-shattering”.     Pprosecutors had recommended in a sentencing hearing earlier this year that Grantham receive a parole ineligibility up to 18 years. Singer Tems has recounted how she struggled financially to provide for her family before becoming successful.    In an interview with GQ, Tems revealed that she didn't become successful overnight. She stated that year before she released her hit song “Mr Rebel”, she was living alone and struggling financially.   The singer said she was putting pressure on herself to help provide for her family, which was difficult without the security of a stable job.   Tems revealed that at some point, she was broke, helpless, and also stole food. She said;   “I couldn’t take care of anybody. “There were times when I was not just broke – I was broke and hopeless. I used to steal food. I used to go to my aunty’s house just so she could give me food to take home. “I just felt like, What is the point of me existing right now? You have to remember those times. A 90-year-old man who repeatedly stabbed his blind and frail wife while she slept because he could not cope with caring for her has been spared jail. Retired butcher Edward Turpin used a carving knife to attack Joan Turpin, 90, in bed at their home in Orpington, Kent, on September 22, 2021. She suffered several wounds, with one of the blows causing her lung to collapse. The Old Bailey heard it was "a matter of luck" she was not killed.   In a video interview recorded while she was in hospital, Mrs Turpin said: "He woke me up with the knife in my chest telling me he couldn’t take any more."   Mrs Turpin, who has lost her eyesight, suffers diabetes and needs a catheter, had become increasingly dependent on her husband’s help before the attack.    The court heard they had been happily married for nearly 70 years.   Mrs Turpin has been in a care home since the knife attack and is only able to speak to her husband over the telephone.  G...

Russian President, Vladimir Putin will not win the war in Ukraine despite his new order to mobilize thousands of extra troops, transatlantic military alliance, NATO has said.   In an address to Russians on Wednesday, September 21, Putin announced he would call up 300,000 reservists to fight in Ukraine and backed a plan to annex parts of the country, telling the West he was prepared to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia.  "If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will use all available means to protect our people - this is not a bluff," Putin said. Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment has said that the court order directing the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its strike will not prevent negotiations with the lecturers on their demands.   The Minister said this while receiving members of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) in his office in Abuja.  Ngige also said “the government will order the vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors to reopen the universities in line with the court order.”   He said;    “The ruling is in the best interest of the nation. The US has blasted the Russian president, Vladimir Putin for planning to mobilize more forces and carry out referendums in occupied regions of Ukraine despite the United Nations General Assembly taking place in New York this week.   US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the fact that Russia is moving ahead with referendums in Ukrainian territory, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly contemplating mobilizing more reserve forces while the United Nations General Assembly is happening, shows Putin’s “utter contempt and disdain” for the UN.  “ The very principles that we're here to uphold this week in the charter of sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, are what are being violently aggressed by Russia, including through the attempts to proceed with these referenda and putting even more forces into the effort to seize Ukrainian sovereign territory.” Blinken said   Blinken also said it was not a surprise that Russia was making the...

Apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has warned the Federal Government against allowing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu,  to die in custody of the Directorate of State Services (DSS). This comes after his brother Emmanuel Kanu and attorney Ifeanyi Ejiofor had raised the alarm on Kanu's health condition following a routine visit at the Department of State Service cell.
