The trial of US R&B singer, R. Kelly started at a court in Brooklyn, New York on Wednesday, August 18, and details have started pouring in over what transpired during the hearing . The 'i believe I can fly' hitmaker is accused of racketeering, sexual abuse and bribery; charges which he has repeatedly denied but could spend decades in jail if he is found guilty by the jury. Some of the allegations made against the singer date back more than 20 years. Kelly faces charges that he was the ringleader of a two-decade-long scheme where he recruited women and underage girls for sex.  Prosecutors described Mr Kelly as "a man who used lies, manipulation, threats and physical abuse to dominate his victims and to avoid accountability for years". The Oyo State Police Command has arrested nine suspected members of a dreaded cult group, Eye Confraternity.  The State Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, who paraded the suspects at the police headquarters at Eleyele, Ibadan on Wednesday, August 18, said they were arrested after the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Atiba Division got information that some cultists were gathering to do handing-over and initiation of some new members. The suspects were identified as Ayinde Kehinde (23), Bolaji Owodunni (27), Adedeji Abdullahi (23), Folaranmi Babatunde (26), Omiwinde Oyekunle (19), Olayemi Quadri (23), Olafemi Oyewole (33), Olamide Joshua (21) and Toheeb Bello (25). A small wildfire swept through a mobile home park, leaving dozens of homes in ashes, the latest in a series of explosive blazes propelled by gusts that have torn through Northern California mountains and forests. The drought-parched region was expected to see red flag warnings for dangerously high winds and hot, dry weather through Thursday. Those conditions have fed a dozen uncontrolled wildfires, including the month-old Dixie Fire and the nearby Caldor Fire in the northern Sierra Nevada that incinerated much of the small rural towns of Greenville and Grizzly Flats.  No deaths have been reported despite the speed and damage of the blazes. The Taliban met with former Afghan President Hamid Karzai Wednesday to discuss setting up a government. Taliban commander Anas Haqqani, a senior leader of the Haqqani Network – a militant Taliban faction that overtook Kabul Sunday – sat down with the former leader. Karzai, the dominant political figure in Afghanistan following the 2001 US invasion, was accompanied by his former government’s main peace envoy, Abdullah Abdullah, according to a Taliban official who declined to be identified.  The former president, who served as leader from 2001 to 2014, was stepping up to promote a peaceful transfer of power after President Ashraf Ghani abandoned his post and fled to the United Arab Emirates amid the resurgent Taliban takeover.

A Brazilian Bishop has resigned days after a video of him allegedly masturbating on a video call went viral. The Vatican announced that Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Tomé Ferreira da Silva, 60, of Sao Jose de Rio Preto, who confirmed to a local newspaper Diario da Regiao that it was, in fact, him in the video, but provided no additional comment. The bishop has been subject to other Vatican investigations — including covering up reports of sexual abuse and many in his diocese have petitioned for his removal since 2014. In 2015, the Vatican launched an investigation into alleged embezzlement and having a romantic relationship with his driver.
