Eleven people who were taking selfies have been killed and many more left injured after lightning struck a historic fort in India on Sunday. As many as 30 people were on the towers of the 12th-century Amer Fort in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan when the lightning strikes occurred. Eleven people were killed while another 17 were injured, with three in critical condition, according to police. The fort, which gives a panoramic view across Jaipur, was packed with tourists on Sunday. When the lightning struck near Amer Fort, people were said to be taking selfies close to the watchtower, while some jumped to the ground after the strike, according to local media reports. Senior Jaipur police officer Saurabh Tiwari said: “It was already raining when the people were there. They huddled in the towers as the rainfall intensified.   The national assembly was flooded again following a heavy downpour today, July 12.  The leak came from the dome at the complex, which houses a main lobby that leads to the chambers of the senate and the house of representatives.     While lawmakers were not present as there is no plenary today, it is however the second time the assembly will be getting flooded in three weeks.       

The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to defend the Philippines' armed forces from attack in the South China Sea. According to the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, the US will come to Phillipines aid if attacks were launched against it, as it has a 70-year-old mutual defense treaty with the country. Blinken made the comments on Sunday, July 11, in a statement marking the fifth anniversary of a ruling by an independent arbitration tribunal rejecting China's expansive territorial claims over the waterway, in support of the Philippines. The 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague dismissed China's claims to the South China Sea outright, while making clear that China was infringing on Philippine sovereignty through activities such as island-building in Manila's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).   China disavowed the tribunal and has since continued to build up and militarily reinforce its positions in the South China Sea...

Renowed author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has said that her family's experience during the funerals of her parents has reaffirmed her reservations about churches in Nigeria.   Chimamanda lost her mum, Grace Ifeoma Adichie, on March 1, 2021, months after she lost her father. She along with her five other siblings buried their mum in May. In an article titled ''Dreaming as a singe family'' which was published in the latest edition of the L’osservatore Romano weekly bulletin, Ms. Adichie alleged that the church did not treat her family with compassion as they should during the funeral of both her parents.   ''My family’s experiences during my parents’ funerals served to reaffirm, if not renew, my reservations about the Nigerian church. Gianluigi Donnarumma has been named Euro 2020's Player of the Tournament after his penalty-saving heroics helped Italy beat England in the shootout at Wembley on Sunday night.  The 6'5'' and soon-to-be Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper kept out Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho's effort as well as winning save from Bukayo Saka to help Italy secure the trophy. He also kept out two spot-kicks in the semi-finals against Spain.     He is now the second goalkeeper to win the award after Peter Schmeichel's instrumental role in guiding Denmark to glory in 1992. Donnarumma was also named Serie A's Best Goalkeeper after the 22-year-old helped AC Milan back into the Champions League after an eight-season hiatus.

Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has threatened to issue a bench warrant of arrest on a former Aviation Minister, Senator Stella Oduah, if she fails to appear in court for trial on October 19. The judge gave the warning today Monday, July 12, when Oduah who now represents Anambra North Senatorial District in the Senate, and some other defendants were absent at the proceedings with no explanation from their lawyers In the 25-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC, Oduah and the nine other defendants are accused, among others, of engaging in the laundering of about N10billion. They are particularly charged with conspiracy, money laundering and maintaining anonymous bank accounts with an old generation bank.
