Pope Francis, 84, is expected to spend the next week in hospital as he recovers from intestinal surgery, according to the Vatican. “His Holiness Pope Francis is in good general condition, alert and breathing spontaneously,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told journalists on July 5. The pope underwent a surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on July 4 to relieve stricture of the colon caused by diverticulitis. The surgery lasted for about three hours and included a hemicolectomy, which is the removal of the left part of the colon. The procedure was carried out under general anesthesia. Dr. Sergio Alfieri performed the surgery with the assistance of nine other physicians. Colonic stricture, also called stenosis, is a condition in which part of the large intestine becomes narrower than usual. It can become dangerous if it is too narrow to let food safely pass through.

Matteo Guendouzi has confirmed he is leaving Arsenal after being frozen out by manager Mikel Arteta for taunting Brighton players about their wages during a game last season. Congratulations are in order for Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton who are now officially married.  According to  Us  magazine, the “Hollaback Girl” singer, 51, and the country crooner, 45, tied the knot more than eight months after their engagement in October 2020.  On Sunday, Page Six shared photos from the wedding festivities at the country singer's Tishomingo ranch in Oklahoma.     Stefani, 51, and Shelton, 45, began dating in 2015 after meeting as coaches on NBC’s “The Voice.” At the time, the pair were both newly divorced. In July 2015, Shelton filed for divorce from Miranda Lambert, his second wife, after four years of marriage. Gunmen suspected to be assassins have killed the Chief Executive Officer of AutoEase services in Enugu State, Mr. Ifeanyi Okeke. It was gathered that the deceased was shot dead by yet to be identified gunmen on Sunday night, July 4, while on his way to his house located at Brick Estate, by Ekweremadu Drive, Independence Layout Enugu. He was said to have been killed in the presence of his 7-year-old son who he had gone to pick from a barbing salon. In what has been seen as a major blow to transgender rights, the British Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government has said one must have a vagina to be a woman. The housing secretary, Robert Jenrick, said being a woman is a biological matter. He said he agreed with his colleague Liz Truss, who is the minister for women and equalities, when she said "women do have vaginas". Their comments are a blow to activists campaigning for trans people to get the right to self-identify as their lived gender. Last autumn the government went back on its promise to change the Gender Recognition Act to allow people to "self-ID". A hockey goalkeeper, Matiss Kivlenieks who plays for Columbus Blue Jackets died on Sunday following a Fourth of July bizarre accident in Michigan, according to local police. Lt. Jason Meier of the Novi Police Department said Kivlenieks was in a hot tub when a mortar-style firework tilted slightly and started to go off toward people nearby.    Kivlenieks and several others were 'pursued by the fireworks.' As he and other people attempted to run away, the 24-year-old slipped and fell, and suffered a head injury.   "At the moment, we’re pretty certain this was a tragic accident," Meier said. Emergency services arrived at the scene at 10:13 p.m. local time on Sunday, four minutes late. They rushed Kivlenieks to a local hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after. Crystal Palace have appointed Patrick Vieira as their new manager on a three-year deal. The Arsenal legend replaces Roy Hodgson who stepped down at the end of last season after four years at the helm. Vieira has signed a contract until the summer of 2024 and accepts his third role in senior management.
