The lander carrying China’s first Mars rover has touched down on the red planet, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) confirmed on Saturday morning. It is the first time China has landed a probe on a planet other than Earth and made it the second country after the United States to do so. Tianwen-1, consisting of an orbiter, a lander and a rover, was launched from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the coast of southern China’s island province of Hainan on July 23, 2020. After more than six months in transit, Tianwen-1 reached the Red Planet in February where it had been in orbit since. It was the first step in China’s planetary exploration of the solar system, with the aim of completing orbiting, landing and roving on the red planet in one mission. A six-foot bronze crucifix worth £20,000 has been stolen from a church garden of remembrance in Newcastle. According to Daily Mail, thieves took the sculpture from a garden where mourners scattered the ashes of their loved ones outside All Saints Church in Gosforth, Newcastle.    The crucifix, which was erected in the church's remembrance garden in 1965, was stolen overnight on Thursday, May 13, the report said.    Confirming the incident, Neighbourhood Inspector Harninder Bola, of Northumbria Police said: 'This is a highly sentimental piece of the remembrance garden at All Saints and the church and its congregation are understandably devastated.   'The crucifix watched over an area where the ashes of the community's loved ones have been scattered and these thieves have disturbed that area during their raid.   'Reputable scrap dealers will not accept this cross and we would ask the thieves to do the right thing and return it to the churc...

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a strong warning that the second year of Covid-19 is set to be "far more deadly." Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, (WHO) Director-General issued the warning on Friday, May 14.  He stated that “we’re on track for the second year of this pandemic to be far more deadly than the first.” The DG added that trickle-down vaccination is not an effective strategy for fighting a deadly respiratory virus as COVID-19 has already cost more than 3.3 million lives.  “Vaccine supply remains a key challenge, but this week I’ve been pleased to see leaders & manufacturers working to: share doses with COVAX, make new deals involving tech-transfer and sharing of know-how and call for lifting trade barriers as soon as possible.” Tedros said. A New York man who confessed to the gruesome slaying of his mother sexually assaulted her as he beat and strangled her, prosecutors revealed Sunday night, May 9. Pushkar Sharma, aged 28, from Queens, told police he woke up the morning before Mother’s Day “with an uncontrollable urge to hurt someone,” according to a criminal complaint.   About 8 a.m. Saturday, he went down to the basement of the family home on Winchester Blvd. near Braddock Ave. in Bellerose Manor and attacked his mother, prosecutors said. Sharma allegedly approached his 65-year old mother from behind, wrapped his hands around her throat, and started choking and punching her in the face. She struggled for several minutes as the horrific attack continued. Anambra State Vigilante office at Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area and a police station in the community were on Sunday May 9, attacked by unknown gunmen.  Police spokesperson in the state, Ikenga Tochukwu said the attack on the vigilante office was carried out around 7pm.    Tochukwu said;    “The hoodlums who came with a Toyota Sienna vehicle and motorcycles started shooting sporadically. “Unfortunately two yet unidentified persons sustained gunshot injury."   The attack at Ozubulu police station was repelled by the officers and it was learnt that no police officer sustained an injury during the attack.
