The Biden administration on Friday, Feb 5, said the U.S. would support Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the next director-general of the World Trade Organization, hours after South Korea’s trade minister stepped out of the race. The Biden administration’s decision is the last hurdle standing in the way of Ms. Okonjo-Iweala assuming the top job at the WTO, after South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee pulled out. Last year, Ms. Okonjo-Iweala was supported by a majority of WTO members, but the Trump administration backed Ms. Yoo, saying she was better qualified. The office of the U.S. Trade Representative said in a statement Friday: "Dr. Okonjo-Iweala brings a wealth of knowledge in economics and international diplomacy from her 25 years with the World Bank and two terms as Nigerian Finance Minister."   Former Presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba has waded into the cryptocurrency controversy which was triggered by the Central Bank of Nigeria's letter in which financial institutions were asked to close accounts "dealing in cryptocurrencies or facilitating payments for cryptocurrency".  Garba Adamu in his tweet alleged that many people have lost money through cryptocurrencies which he described as a "shortcut business". He also advised Nigerians to invest in real assets like cows.  The presidential aspirant added that "Cow Ranching business is more lucrative than all cryptocurrencies combined." The Federal Government has lifted the ban it placed on Emirates Airlines. The airline was barred from lifting passengers from Nigeria after the United Arab Emirates made it mandatory for such passengers to carry out Rapid Antigen Testing in laboratories that are not approved or authorized by the appropriate regulatory bodies. The UAE has now withdrawn the Rapid Antigen Testing requirements for its Nigerian passengers. Following this decision, the Presidential Task Force on COVID19 directed the immediate lifting of the suspension placed on the operations of Emirates Airlines in Nigeria. A letter by the Director-General of NCAA, Capt. Veteran rapper, Ruggedman has shared his thoughts on property acquisition by Nollywood actresses. In a tweet he shared, Ruggedman asked why only the female actors are the ones buying cars and building houses.  The rapper who wondered why the male actors are left behind, added that it has discouraged him from acting.  He tweeted;    My male actors in nollywood whats going on? Its just the females that are buying cars and building houses left and right. I wanted to come into nollywood but at this rate, I am not coming again  

Police in Kenya have arrested a 55-year-old Nigerian man, Yussuf Daniel Masara, for allegedly defrauding a U.S national of Sh17.6 Million.  A statement issued on Thursday, February 4, by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, DCI, said detectives based in Kilimani, Nairobi arrested Masara on Wednesday night for obtaining money by false pretense. "Yussuf Daniel Masara had convinced his victim, a U.S national that he would sell him 50Kgs of gold valued at Sh17.6 Million," the statement reads. "However after failing to keep his end of the bargain, the matter was reported to detectives based at Kilimani leading to his arrest. Masara is believed to be part of a wider criminal enterprise, defrauding unsuspecting victims"

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Benin Zonal office have arrested three suspected fraudsters for allegedly being involved in a land sale scam.  The suspects identified as Monday Evboumwan, Adams Edigin, and Charles Amenaghawon, were paraded at the Commission's office.. According to the spokesperson of the antigraft agency, Wilson Uwujaren, the suspects allegedly sold a non-existent plot of land for N6 million to an unsuspecting victim. He said they have made useful statements and that they would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations were completed.

The Anambra state government has announced the introduction of a curfew in the state, to help check the spread of COVID19 virus. The Secretary to Anambra State government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, who disclosed this, said the curfew will start from Monday, February 8, and will last from 9pm to 6am daily until further notice. Chukwulobelu said the state governor, Willie Obiano, has directed that civil servants in the state, from grade level one to twelve should work from home until further notice, with immediate effect.  Professor Chukwulobelu also announced other measures the state government is taking to help stop the spread of Covid-19 in the state.   “The state government has activated and made operational mobile courts to try Covid-19 protocol offenders, beginning from Monday, 8th February 2021.  Also, the state COVID-19 Task Force, including the Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Trade and Commerce have been empowered to increase their hospita...
