  Charley Pride, the son of sharecroppers who rose to become country music’s first Black superstar is dead at the age of 86.  The singer who rose to fame in the 1960s, died on Saturday December 12 from COVID-19 complications. While Pride is not the first black singer in country music, he became one of its biggest stars during a period of division in the US.    In 1971, just four years after his first hit records, he won the Country Music Association’s entertainer of the year award, the genre’s highest honor. He won three Grammy Awards, followed by a lifetime achievement award in 2017.     Born on March 18, 1934, in Sledge, Mississipi to Tessie Stewart Pride and Mack Pride Sr. he served in the Army before moving to Montana to try to make it as a baseball player.   Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has gone into self-isolation after one of his close aides tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, December 10. The State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday December 11, said the Governor and other members of his team will be tested by the Lagos State biobank today but will remain in isolation until the results of the tests are available. "We are seeing slightly increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases in clusters in Lagos and all Lagosians should adhere to the prescribed advisories of safe distancing, good hand and respiratory hygiene and avoidance of unnecessary gatherings," the Commissioner said. "This is not the first time Mr. Governor is having the COVID-19 test. He has had at least three since May when he announced that 10 of his aides had tested positive for the virus." he added.

  FIFA, on Friday, announced their final three-man shortlist for this year’s Men Best Player of the Year, Puskas Awards and Best Goalkeeper. The world football governing body also announced their final three-man shortlist for this year’s Men Best Coach of the year, Women’s Best Player and among other awards in a post via its website. The nominees were chosen by a panel of football experts. The winner would be announced during The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony on December 17, 2020, and it will be streamlined live on FIFA’s website.     Dr Isidore Ojukwu Nwankwo, a former rector of Enugu Polytechnic has been sent to to prison for scamming his students. Justice N.I. Buba of the Federal High Court, Enugu handed over the sentence on Thursday. Nwankwo was prosecuted by the Enugu Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a six-count charge, bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence to the tune of N1,153,700.00. The money was obtained by fraud from some students of the school in contravention of Section 1(1)(a) of Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and Punishable under Section 1(3) of the Same Act. Nwankwo’s journey to prison began when one Eze and 19 other students of the school petitioned the Enugu Zonal Office of the EFCC, alleging that they were deceived into believing that the school was partly owned by the Enugu State government and accredited by the appropriate authorities.
