  Former UEFA president Michel Platini has launched civil and legal proceedings against Fifa and current president Gianni Infantino over corruption allegations from 2015, which he says derailed his bid to lead the governing body.   The criminal complaint, filed in the French courts, accuses Infantino and two former Fifa officials – legal director Marco Villiger and audit committee chair Domenico Scala – of malicious prosecution.   In a separate civil lawsuit, Platini, 70, is seeking financial compensation from Fifa over alleged efforts to block his election as Fifa president.   Former France captain Platini was Uefa president from 2008 to 2015 and had been the favourite to succeed Sepp Blatter as Fifa president in 2016.   However, in 2015 the pair became embroiled in allegations of fraud and corruption over a payment of 2m Swiss francs (£1.6m) made to Platini in 2011, which, it had been claimed, was authorised by Blatter.   It led Blatter to resign from his...

  Co-op Academy in Manchester went into lockdown this morning after three people were "stabbed" in a serious incident.   Multiple police cars were at the scene in Blackley, along with a helicopter hovering above as an ambulance treated the victims.   Students are sheltered in their classrooms, parents said, as police responded to the incident.   Police said a schoolgirl has been arrested, but the victim’s injuries aren’t believed to be "serious".   Crowds of parents have arrived outside the school as families wait to take home their children.   One mum wrote on Facebook: "The school has just called to ask permission if my son is allowed to leave the premises. So I trust that the threat must be over and is now safe."   "Emergency services remain on scene, and we are supporting the school. There is not believed to be any wider threat to the pupils and staff in the school," the police said.

  Nick Reiner, the son of popular movie director Rob Reiner, who is charged with his murder, has filed a petition for his inheritance.   The 32-year-old made the shocking demand in court documents on Monday, requesting the money his parents, Rob and Michele, set aside in a trust for him.   According to Mail Online, Nick claims in the petition that he was supposed to receive half of the $1.5 million in his trust when he turned 30, with the other half allocated when he turns 35.   But, he alleges, the current trustee - identified as lawyer Paul Kanin - 'has offered a shifting series of excuses and justifications' for not turning over the funds, including 'unsubstantiated "concerns" about Nick's so-called competence to "manage a trust"' despite the terms his parents set up.   When he then tried to hire famed defense lawyer Alan Jackson to help him fight the murder charges, Nick said the trustee refused to pay Jackson - prompting the lawyer to withdr...

  Two female pilgrims from Sokoto State, have died in Makkah, Saudi Arabia after the successful completion of the 2026 Hajj exercise.     The Deputy Amirul Hajj and Grand Khadi of Sokoto State, Alhaji Sodangi Acida, disclosed this in a statement issued by the Head of Information and Communications of the Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency, Faruku Umar on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.     The deceased were identified as Ladi Umar from Bodinga Local Government Area and Hadiza Umar from Yabo Local Government Area.     Acida said two other female pilgrims involved in the same accident are currently receiving treatment at a Saudi hospital, with one being treated for a fracture and the other for an arm dislocation.     He conveyed the condolences of the Sokoto State Government to the families of the deceased and prayed for Allah to forgive their shortcomings and grant them Aljannatul Firdaus.     The Deputy Amirul Hajj said the first batch of ...

  Los Angeles Rams starting left tackle Alaric Jackson was arrested on Monday night for felony domestic battery and is currently being held at an LAPD jail. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a home in the San Fernando Valley around 11 PM following a call to authorities. According to NBC Los Angeles, which first reported the story, police determined that Jackson had initially been engaged in a verbal dispute with a woman over her allegedly recording him with her phone. Jackson reportedly tried to take the phone from her, leaving scratch marks on her arm. Jackson, 27, was taken into custody at 12:30 AM and transported to the LAPD's Valley Jail. He was booked just before 4:30 AM on the felony domestic battery charge.   Operatives of the Kwara State Police Command have arrested two suspected bandits and recovered two AK-47 rifles as well as other items in Baruten Local Government Area of the state.    The spokesperson for the command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 said operatives also apprehended an alleged facilitator, Umoru Saliu, linked to a criminal network operating in Baruten.  According to the statement, the operation carried out on June 6, led to the arrest of Bello Mohammed and Abubakar Mohammed at a suspected criminal hideout in Okuta, Baruten LGA.   The PPRO said investigation linked the suspects to a criminal network allegedly involved in kidnapping, armed attacks, and other violent crimes within the Baruten axis and adjoining communities.   Ejire-Adeyemi added that further investigation revealed that Saliu allegedly provided accommodation and for members of the criminal network, including its leaders. ...

  Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for fraud and conspiracy, has applied for a pardon from US President Donald Trump.   The website of the Office of the Pardon Attorney of the Department of Justice lists a request by Bankman-Fried for a pardon and says its status is "pending."   Trump, in an interview with The New York Times in January, said he did not plan to issue a pardon to the 34-year-old Bankman-Fried.   Bankman-Fried, known as SBF, became a billionaire before age 30 and turned FTX, a small start-up he co-founded in 2019, into the world's second largest crypto exchange platform.
