  The Nigerian military has defended recent air operations carried out in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, insisting the strikes targeted armed bandits following allegations from residents that civilians may have been affected. In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Michael Onoja, the Defence Headquarters said the operations were conducted based on intelligence reports indicating that armed groups had gathered at Lukupe Village on May 9, 2026. According to the military, the Nigerian Army UAV Command carried out coordinated air interdiction missions between 11:59pm on May 9 and 6:00am on May 10 across several locations, including Katerma, Bokko, Kusasu and Kuduru villages in Shiroro LGA. “The operations were meticulously planned and executed based on credible, actionable intelligence confirming the convergence of terrorists at those specific locations,” the statement said.   Former Polish justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro has reportedly fled from Hungary to the United States while facing multiple criminal charges in Poland, according to local media reports. Ziobro, who was granted asylum by the government of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán last year, is wanted in Poland on allegations including abuse of power, leading an organised criminal group and misusing public funds intended for crime victims. Polish prosecutors also accuse him of authorising the purchase of Israeli Pegasus spyware, allegedly used to monitor political opponents during his time in office.   A teenage girl from West London has reportedly become the youngest person to be banned from entering every shop across England and Wales after repeatedly breaching a criminal behaviour order. The girl, now 15, had originally been issued with a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) in June last year after a series of incidents in West London. The order prohibited her from entering any private retail or commercial premises across England and Wales, alongside restrictions on visiting certain areas and associating with specific individuals. She later appeared before magistrates after admitting to nine breaches of the order as well as two counts of common assault linked to incidents during a fast-food-related disturbance in December.   The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already facing criticism from parts of the US hospitality industry, with hotel operators claiming fan turnout is falling short of expectations as high travel and accommodation costs discourage visitors. According to reports, hotel demand has dropped in nine of the 11 American host cities ahead of the tournament, which begins next month across the United States, Canada and Mexico. In Kansas, where the England national team will reportedly be based during the competition, about 90 per cent of hotels are said to be recording weaker bookings than normal for the summer period.
