  Russia has declared a unilateral ceasefire with Ukraine from May 8 to 9, coinciding with its annual World War II Victory Day celebrations, while warning of a potential escalation if the truce is breached. The announcement, made by the Russian defence ministry, followed a proposal by President Vladimir Putin during a recent phone call with US President Donald Trump. “In accordance with a decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, Vladimir Putin, a ceasefire has been declared from May 8–9, 2026 … We hope that the Ukrainian side will follow suit,” the ministry said.   At least two people have been killed and several others severely injured after a car drove into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig on Monday. Axel Schuh, head of Leipzig’s fire brigade, confirmed that two victims died at the scene, while at least three others suffered life-threatening injuries. Approximately 20 additional bystanders were reported as being "affected" by the incident. Authorities have arrested the suspected driver, identified by Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster as a 33-year-old German citizen. Police stated that the suspect "no longer poses a threat" and is currently in custody.   While a motive has not yet been established, Schuster noted that officials are investigating the incident as a deliberate act, and he did not rule out mental health issues as a contributing factor.   Two people were killed and 32 others sustained injuries after a vehicle rammed into worshippers during a congregational prayer in Yobe State. The incident occurred at the JIBWIS Juma’at Mosque along the Kano–Maiduguri highway in Damagum, headquarters of Fune Local Government Area of the State. The Deputy Governor, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana, on Monday, May 4, expressed sympathy with the families of the deceased and those injured.   Britney Spears   has been sentenced to one year of probation following her arrest for driving under the influence.   The popstar pleaded guilty at her arraignment at Ventura County Superior Court on Monday, two months after she was arrested for DUI.   The 44-year-old singer,   who recently left rehab after a three-week stint following her March 4 arrest, did not appear in court, but entered a guilty plea via her lawyer, Michael Goldstein.   Spears was sentenced to 12 months probation, a day in jail, which she's already served, and ordered to enroll in a three-month alcohol and drug education program after accepting a plea deal in DUI cases known as a 'wet reckless'.   The plea bargain allows the driver to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs – a lesser charge that carries a much lighter sentence.   The deal is reserved for defendants with no prior history of DUI, with a low blood alcohol level, when there is no in...

  A 45-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly killing his pregnant daughter and his wife in a violent incident in Kadoma, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police. Police said the suspect, identified as Obert Namurokosi, is in custody following the deaths of his wife, Cynthia Namurokosi, 45, and their daughter, Takudzwa Namurokosi, 23, who was heavily pregnant. “The ZRP confirms the arrest of Obert Namurokosi (45) in connection with two cases of murder which occurred on 03/05/26 in Victory Park, Kadoma,” police said. Authorities stated that the incident began as a domestic dispute at the family home.   A suspected outbreak of the rare hantavirus on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean has left three people dead, including an elderly couple, and at least three others ill, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and South Africa’s health authorities.   In a statement to The Associated Press, WHO said an investigation was underway but that at least one case of hantavirus had been confirmed. One of the patients was in intensive care in a South African hospital, the U.N. health agency said, and it was working with authorities to evacuate two others with symptoms from the ship.   The Dutch company that operates the cruise said the ship was now sitting off the coast of Cape Verde, an island nation off Africa’s west coast, and local authorities were assisting but had not allowed anyone to disembark.
