Scientists say they have successfully eliminated HIV from infected cells, using Nobel Prize-winning Crispr gene-editing technology, the BBC reports.   The technology works like scissors, but at the molecular level, to cut DNA so that “bad” bits can be removed or inactivated.   The hope is to ultimately be able to rid the body entirely of the virus, although much more work is needed to check it would be safe and effective.   Existing HIV medicines can stop the virus but not eliminate it.   The University of Amsterdam team, presenting a synopsis of their early findings at a medical conference this week, stressed that their work remains merely “proof of concept” and will not become a cure for HIV any time soon.   And Dr James Dixon, stem-cell and gene-therapy technologies associate professor at the University of Nottingham, agrees, saying the full findings still require scrutiny.   “Much more work will be needed to demonstrate results in these cell...

Finland has remained the happiest country in the world for the seventh year in a row, according to the annual World Happiness Report published on Wednesday, March 20.    Fiinland's Nordic neighbours Sweden, Denmark and Iceland also retained their places in the top 10.   Rising unhappiness, especially among young people, has seen other Western countries drop down the index, with the United States and Germany dropping out of the top 20 for the first time since the report's first edition more than a decade ago.    The United States and Germany came in 23rd and 24th respectively. In turn, Costa Rica and Kuwait entered the top 20 at 12 and 13, while Eastern European countries Serbia, Bulgaria and Latvia reported the biggest increases in happiness.    Afghanistan, plagued by a humanitarian catastrophe since the Taliban regained control in 2020, remained in last place.    The survey asks people in 143 countries and territories to evaluate...

Former US President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos accusing them of defamation over assertions the anchor made in a combative interview.   In an interview on “This Week,” Stephanopoulos pressed Republican Representative Nancy Mace, a rape survivor, over her continued support of Trump after a jury found he sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll in 1996, awarding her $88 million for battery and defamation. Stephanopoulos asserted multiple times in the interview with Mace that Trump had “raped” Carroll. “You endorsed Donald Trump for president. Judges and two separate juries have found him liable for rape and for defaming the victim of that rape. How do you square your endorsement of Donald Trump with the testimony that we just saw?” Stephanopoulos asked Mace.   Vietnam's President, Vo Van Thuong, has resigned after just one year in office. The Vietnamese Communist Party accepted the resignation of President Vo Van Thuong, the government said on Wednesday, March 20. The government said in a statement that Thuong had violated party rules, adding that those "shortcomings had negatively impacted public opinion, affecting the reputation of the Party, State and him personally". Former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider has denied creating a toxic workplace while at the children's channel and sexualizing young child stars on set.    Schneider who is behind hit Nickelodeon shows like "The Amanda Show" and "Drake & Josh" has said there's no truth to the allegations floated in ‘Quiet on Set’. The list of the top 10 universities in Africa for 2024 as ranked by EduRank, a top source for social media analytics in the education sector, has been released and no Nigerian university is in the top 10.   The organisation stated on its website that the ranking was based on research outputs, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence.   It added that it arrived at the ranking after analysing 24.5 million citations received by 2.16 million academic publications made by 1,104 universities from Africa.   EduRank conducts a series of statistical analyses to generate comparative university rankings in various fields, by country, region, and globally.  In the ratings for 2024, no Nigerian university made it to the top 10.   An Ohio woman who left her 16-month-old daughter alone for more than a week while she vacationed, leading to the girl’s death, was sentenced to life in prison without parole Monday morning, March 18.   Kristel Candelario, 32, left her daughter, Jailyn, alone and unattended at her home in Cleveland on June 6, 2023. Authorities said she did not return until June 16.   According to prosecutors, Candelario traveled to Detroit and Puerto Rico. She returned 10 days later to find the girl unresponsive and called police.       The child was pronounced dead at the home. Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja has rejected the bail application for the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.   In a ruling delivered today March 19, the court ordered an accelerated hearing of the case involving the embattled IPOB leader who is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony.   Kanu, who was brought to the court on Tuesday, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in June 2021.     Justice Nyako held that the court would only grant an accelerated hearing in the matter and ordered the prosecution to call its first witness.   Channels TV reports that the counsel for Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, expressed his displeasure over the ruling. Famine is "imminent" in northern Gaza, as the entire population of the strip experiences high levels of food insecurity amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, according to a newly released report. The report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) initiative said a famine in the north of the strip may occur between mid-March and the end of May unless an immediate cease-fire occurs so that essential food and supplies can be delivered consistently to Gazans. "The conditions necessary to prevent famine have not been met and the latest evidence confirms that famine is imminent in the northern governorates," the report said.   The report projects that northern Gaza will be classified as Phase 5, the highest stage of food insecurity equivalent to famine levels of starvation, in the next month and a half. Former Brazil and Barcelona footballer, Dani Alves has pleaded to be released from prison pending his final sentence for raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub. Alves, 40, who was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison last month, told a hearing on Tuesday morning: 'I believe in justice. I'm not going to run away.'  His request to be released from the Brians 2 Prison near Barcelona, where he has been held since January last year, has been opposed by the prosecutor's office in Spain. They argue there remains a flight risk given Alves' wealth and the high penalty imposed, Marca reported.   Alves, appearing via video link from prison, assured the court he plans to 'get to the end' of the case because he 'believes in justice.' A Nigerian lady was rescued last night after she attempted to take her life by drinking bleach.    A Nigerian pharmacist who rescued the young lady said she attempted suicide because her boyfriend broke up with her.   ‘’Suicide attempt because your man broke up with you should never be an option!!!   Around 8:30pm last night, a lady who drank hypo to end her life because the boyfriend tried ending their relationship was rushed in. Zoo workers were left horrified after watching a lion rip out the throat of the lioness he was intended to mate with. Nestor and Maya were supposed to mate when they were first introduced to each other as part of a Belgian theme park’s breeding program on Friday, March 15. They had first been separated by barriers to get used to each other’s scents at the zoo in Bellewaerde, Ypres.   Both animals had been moved from Antwerp Zoo to the site in West Flanders as part of a breeding program for endangered species.   Things seemed to be okay so staff decided to remove barriers between them, according to the zoo authorities but the situation quickly deteriorated as the lions started showing signs of aggression. A man and woman have been arrested after a newborn baby boy was found dead in a bin. The woman, believed to be the infant’s mum, is charged with failure to report a death over the shocking incident in South Florida, USA in January.  Her co-accused faces an identical charge along with the illegal disposal of a body.  The full-term baby boy, with umbilical cord still attached, was found on January 7 by a roofing company worker who had noticed a foul odour outside an apartment complex. He found the baby in a reusable shopping bag inside the trash bin, and notified police, according to a Hollywood police affidavit. Police used video surveillance to track down the owner of a car that stopped beside the trash bin, and later used text messages between the man and woman, along with DNA samples taken from the shopping bag, to track down the mother.   An autopsy found the baby had no signs of trauma or injury, according to the affidavit. An 11-year-old boy was killed in a domestic violence attack that critically wounded his pregnant mother while trying to protect her and his younger brother from her ex-boyfriend, who had been released from prison.      According to the Chicago Police Department, the “offender Crosetti Brand, 37, was arrested by members of the Chicago Police Department and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force on March 13, 2024, at 12:20 p.m., in the 4400 block of S. Cottage Grove Ave.        He was hit with several charges, including murder, in connection to the fatal stabbing of the 11-year-old and the attempted murder of his mother, who survived the attack but was taken to the hospital in critical condition.     The victims were identified as Jayden Perkins and his mother, 33-year-old Laterria Smith, in a fundraiser launched by the community to help support the surviving family as they navigate through this “difficult time.”   Sp...

Police in Haiti have launched operations to regain control of the capital from feared 'Barbecue' gang leader.      Haiti cops conducted an operation in a neighborhood of the country's capital - Port-au-Prince - controlled by the notorious gang leader Jimmy Cherizier, that left several criminals dead, an official said today. The mother of former Bayern Munich and Manchester City defender, Jerome Boateng has accused her son of 'abusing women for years' in a shocking email sent to a German media outlet.     The German defender was previously found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Sherin Senler three years ago by a court in Munich. Albuquerque's police department are reportedly suspecting there might be a foul play in the death of porn star, Sophia Leone.    The porn star's death has been described as a "unique situation" by the police department. Leone's body was found on March 1 at her home, and while an official cause of death hasn't been determined, police are investigating her death as suspicious. It has however been pointed out that there are no signs of trauma.   After word of Sophia's death made the rounds, her modelling agency claimed the circumstances surrounding her death involved a robbery and homicide, but the police department told TMZ that's not the case.    A spokesperson told the publication that they were looking at it as a "suspicious death." Former Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro rejected insinuations that he could return to coach Nigeria again. Peseiro left the post at the end of February following the expiration of his contract and has now come out to deny reports that he could make an instant return to manage the three-time African champions.   “As I said, my work with the Super Eagles is over. It was gratifying to coach players of such quality, with my staff we managed to do well in this sense, but the time has come to move on to another project,” Peseiro said in an interview with Sports Italia.   The police in Southgate, Michigan, have arrested a moviegoer for allegedly exposing himself while watching Kristen Stewart's movie, "Love Lies Bleeding".   The 33-year-old man got arrested on Thursday, March 14, after the police got a call that he had fallen asleep in the theatre with the obvious problem being that his penis was out and exposed, which was photographed.     A social media user uploaded a photo that appeared to show the man in question passed out in his seat at the theatre, and it looked like it was taken after the credits rolled and lights came on. The eyewitness claimed the man masturbated and then fell asleep.     The police also noted that the man they arrested was allegedly intoxicated and refused to leave. Engineers have unveiled plans for the world’s largest airplane, nicknamed the WindRunner, which would use renewable energy by transporting gigantic wind turbine blades from point A to B. Designed by the Colorado-based energy company Radia, the behemoth cargo carrier measures a whopping 356 feet long and 79 feet tall with a wingspan of 261 feet.   The plane is as long as a regulation NFL football field and 127 feet longer than the Boeing 747, the world’s largest passenger plane. With a potential carrying capacity of 80 tons, it will also be able to hold 12 times as much as the latter aircraft as well.   In order to accommodate the jumbo jet’s landing, a 6,000 foot runway will also need to be constructed.   The WindRunner’s purpose is to fly the blades of onshore wind turbines which measure between 150-300 plus feet long and can weigh 35 tons to various wind farms.  Due to their large size and unwieldiness, the big fan blades currently have to be transported...

  The Super Falcons of Nigeria have dropped two places in the latest FIFA women’s world ranking. FIFA released the first women’s ranking for 2024 on its official website on Friday, March 15. World champions, Spain retain their lead in the global rankings. The Nine-time African champions dropped from 32nd to 34th position but despite the slide in world ranking, the Super Falcons maintained leadership position in Africa. Reigning African champions Banyana Banyana of South Africa occupy second position on the continent after moving up one place in the world rankings to 51st.
