Suspected kidnappers have killed a Nigerian lady and abducted her brother. The deceased's cousin, Mathew James, who confirmed the incident in a Facebook post on Monday, May 1, said the abducted brother was released in the evening.   “Not Fulani oo the kidnapper attacked the house killed the girl and kidnapped the brother but the boy was released this evening.” he wrote    

More than 20,000 Russian soldiers have been killed and more than 80,000 injured in just five months of fighting in Ukraine, US intelligence officials have said. Most of the troops were killed in brutal trench warfare for the small eastern city of Bakhmut, which Russia has repeatedly claimed it was on the brink of capturing, White House national security council spokesperson John Kirby said on Monday, May 1.   “Russia’s attempt at an offensive in the Donbas, largely through Bakhmut, has failed … Russia has been unable to seize any really strategically significant territory,” Kirby said. The losses are a big increase in Russian casualties even from the bloody first days of the war, and overshadow some of the bloodiest allied battles of the second world war, Kirby added. “It’s three times the number of killed in action that the United States faced on the Guadalcanal campaign in World War II,” the AP quoted Kirby saying. The two sides involved in the Sudan war have agreed to send representatives for negotiations, most likely in Saudi Arabia, the United Nations' special representative in the country, Volker Perthes, said.   Perthes told the Associated Press (AP) news agency on Monday, May 1 that the talks would initially focus on establishing a “stable and reliable” ceasefire monitored by national and international observers.     He said the two sides had already named their representatives for preliminary discussions but cautioned that logistics for talks were still being worked out. Mr Perthes also said that in the past week he had noticed a "change in tone" from the two warring sides, noting their realisation of how dangerous the situation had become and that any victory would be won at "too great a cost". Veteran Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot  has died. He died on Monday evening, May 1, at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.  The 84-year-old folk music and soft rock icon rose to international fame as a folk music star in the 1960s and ’70s. Lightfoot's death was confirmed by his longtime agent, Victoria Lord, but the immediate cause of death was not made public.   Li ghtfoot topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974 with 'Sundown' and also had top 5 songs with 'If You Could Read My Mind' and 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.' The 2023 Met Gala took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday night, May 1, 2023.  This year, the annual affair celebrated the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”   The gala honored the legacy of Lagerfeld, the late designer who helmed fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, his own line and even went ahead to raise funds for The Met’s Costume Institute.   He died on February 19, 2019, at the age of 85 following complications of pancreatic cancer.   A-list stars including, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Doja Cat, Burna Boy, Tems, and many more slayed the red carpet with their stunning looks.   See photos of the show-stopping red carpet arrivals below.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader, Khader Adnan, who became a symbol of Palestinian resistance to Israeli detention policies, died Tuesday May 2 after 87 days of hunger strike, authorities said. Adnan, 45, had been on hunger strike since his arrest on February 5, and while in detention he refused to get medical check ups, the Israeli Prison Service said in a statement announcing his death. He was found dead in his cell early Tuesday following his almost 3-month hunger strike, the prison service added.     The Palestinian Prisoners Society also announced Adnan's death, saying "the Israeli occupation assassinated Sheikh Khader Adnan." He was detained in February on suspicion of membership in a terrorist organization, support for terrorism and incitement, Israeli authorities said.
