The immediate past Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, is currently being grilled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for alleged fraud to the tune of N10bn among others. The Punch learnt that Kwankwaso was invited for allegedly diverting N10bn meant for the payment of pensions and construction of houses.   Some retirees are believed to have written a petition to the commission demanding the investigation and possible prosecution of the ex-governor. “Kwankwaso came in today. He is responding to questions on alleged fraud following a series of petitions the EFCC received against him. In one of such petitions, the former governor was accused of diverting N10bn meant for the payment of pensions and construction of houses,” an EFCC detective said.  The former governor, who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, is among those rumoured to be nursing a Presidential ambition.

Locals in Sokoto and Niger communities affected by telecommunication network shutdown imposed by the governments to fight rampaging bandits say they have been hit by the flip side of the security measure. Residents of some of the vulnerable villages lamented that the attacks had worsened since the blockade of the mobile network, saying that they could no longer make distress calls or receive warning calls to escape impending attacks, The Associated Press reports. The telecommunications blockade was imposed on September 3 in Zamfara State for an initial period of two weeks which was later extended. Although mobile phone service had been restored to Gusau, Zamfara state capital, rural areas remain cut off. Katsina, Sokoto, Niger and Kaduna states have also restricted mobile networks in areas where killings and abductions continue.   The UK police say the Friday, October 15 killing of Conservative MP Sir David Amess is being treated as a terrorist incident. Sir David was stabbed multiple times at his constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex on Friday and a 25-year-old British man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. In a Saturday morning, October 16 statement, the Metropolitan Police have revealed the killing has a potential link to Islamist extremism.    Reports say the politician appears to be of Somali heritage.   The Met said officers are carrying out searches at two addresses in the London area and are not seeking anyone else over the death.   The police say they believed the man, who is in custody in Essex, acted alone but inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are still ongoing.
