  Latifat Tijani has won the first gold medal for Nigeria at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympic Games. Latifat Tijani, gold medalist at the Brazzaville 2015 Africa Games and silver medalist at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, took part in the women’s 45kg powerlifting on Thursday, August 26, 2021, and came top place, winning gold.   Latifat Tijani representing Nigeria in Rio 2016 Paralympics    She defeated China’s Zhe Cui to lift 107kg.    

Nigerian musician, Eedris Abdulkareem has alleged that Igbos would have been killed if the attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) happened in the east. Recall that assailants broke into the NDA premises in the early hours of Monday, killing two army officers and abducting two Majors. The controversial rapper in a post on his Instagram page said, “Let’s assume NDA is located in any of the Igbo States and such attack takes place. By now the Army will be burning down Igbo villages and killing them”

Two Nigerians have pleaded guilty to defrauding postal customers of $565,000 in Maryland, United States. According to a statement on Wednesday by the Federal Court in Maryland, Johnson Ogunlana, 25, of Maryland; and Samson Oguntuyi, 29, of Georgia, “pleaded guilty on the eve of trial to federal charges related to schemes to defraud financial institutions, retail establishments and other business victims, often using the stolen personal information of individual victims”. The statement was titled, ‘Two Nigerian Nationals Plead Guilty in Federal Court in Maryland for Bank and Mail Fraud Conspiracy and Related Charges Just Prior to Trial’. The statement noted that the guilty pleas were announced by Acting United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Jonathan Lenzner; Special Agent in Charge Imari Niles of the US Postal Service, Office of Inspector General; and Postal Inspector in Charge Daniel A. An 18-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly plotting to kill his Asian friend because he slept with three ‘white chicks’.  Matthew Cronjager, who is said to be a ‘racist, antisemitic and Islamaphobic’ teenager was arrested on December 29, 2020 after an undercover cop caught him allegedly spreading hateful literature and discussing terrorist plans. The teenager from Essex in UK, reportedly used the messaging platforms Telegram and Theema to exchange messages with other white nationalists. While allegedly discussing using a 3D printer to create guns last November, Cronjager supposedly told the undercover officer;    ‘I’ve found someone I want to execute.  ‘I know it’s an overall target and he’s a sand n***** that f***** a white girl. Dynasty star Michael Nader has died at the age of 76 just ten days after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. His wife Jodi Lister made the announcement on Facebook on Wednesday, August 25. She revealed that her husband died at their home in Northern California on Monday, August 23. She wrote: "It grieves me to share the sad news that my husband, Michael Nader, passed away at home on August 23rd.   "He was diagnosed with untreatable cancer on Friday the 13th and died 10 days later with me and his best fur friend Storm by his side. "His death and diagnosis was sudden and unexpected and I have never experienced such agony as watching my soul mate die before my eyes. "He was loved by so many and treasured his fans and their letters and emails. A woman has testified that R&B hitmaker R. Kelly’s forced her and his other girlfriends to write fake blackmail letters denying allegations of abuse in order to protect himself from possible legal troubles.  The witness, testifying as a “Jane Doe” in federal court in Brooklyn, made the claims on Wednesday, August 25, at his New York City trial. 'As insurance and a way to make sure these women wouldn't talk, [Kelly] created and collected collateral. He made them create embarrassing videos and false letters,' Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Cruz Melendez said during her opening remarks at Kelly's ongoing sex abuse trial in federal court in Brooklyn on Wednesday, the Daily News reported.  'The defendant would tell us exactly what to say,' the accuser, known on the witness stand as Jane Doe 5, testified. Jane read excerpts from the letters aloud in court, one letter stated: 'I decided I would spank myself really hard until I had bruises....

An Australian citizen was beaten by the Taliban while desperately trying to reach Kabul airport so that he can be evacuated. Distressing video shows the man with blood running down his face and splattered across his polo shirt, crying out that he is an Australian citizen who was trying to reach the airport.  "I am an Australian citizen but they hit me," the bloodied man says before the video cuts out with the sound of gunshots and screaming.  The man, who was born overseas but lives and works as a barber in Adelaide, was assaulted as he headed to Hamid Karzai Airport along with his cousins, thought to include three men and two women.   A source close to the family said that one of the women accompanying the man had a phone hidden under her headscarf. A senior member of the Japanese Yakuza criminal syndicate has been sentenced to death by hanging.  A court in Fukuoka found Satoru Nomura, 74, the head of the Kudo-kai in Kita-Kyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, had ordered four assaults, one of which resulted in death. Nomura denied any involvement. The Asahi Shimbun newspaper reports that judge Ben Adachi also sentenced to Nomura’s second-in-command, Fumio Tanoue, 65, to life. Nomura reportedly threatened the judge saying, “I asked for a fair decision but this is not fair at all.  You will regret this for the rest of your life.” The Japanese don plans to appeal against the sentence. The court ruling said Nomura and Tanoue, “conspired to carry out four attacks”. Nomura, “gave an order in the murder case and the other three crimes were carried out under a chain-in-command structure”.   A middle-aged woman identified as Jackline Anyango, has been arraigned before a Kisumu court for allegedly strangling her neighbour with bra. Appearing before Chief Magistrate Peter Gesora, the court heard how Anyango assaulted Vivian Adhiambo on June 25 at Obunga in Kisumu County, by slapping her on the neck and strangling her using a bra.  She was charged with malicious injury to property contrary to section 339(1) of the penal code, and wilfully and unlawfully damaging a radio and a chair said to be properties of Vivian Adhiambo. Anyango who was also accused of stealing a mobile phone worth ksh15,500, however pleaded not guilty to all the charges read to her before court. In her defence, she told court that the complainant threatened her that she will use all the money she has to ensure that she is locked up. Undefeated World Boxing Council middleweight champion Jermall Charlo was arrested on Wednesday on felony robbery charges from a July incident at a San Antonio bar. Charlo posted bond on three charges of second-degree robbery and was released according to KSAT-TV. A police report said Charlo’s credit card was declined for a large bar tab on the morning on July 16, the eve of Charlo’s brother Jermell’s world title bout in San Antonio. A warrant accused Charlo of removing his identification and cash from his waitress’s possession before departing. Charlo’s attorney, Kent Schaffer, told the stattion his client did not take anything belonging to someone else. “Jermall stole no money from anyone at the club and made no threats toward anyone,” Schaffer told KSAT. “At no time did he rob anyone or take any property other than his own.”  The lawyer said the fighter was concerned after being told his card had been lost and only retrieved his driver’s license.

Kathy Hochul has been sworn-in as first female governor of New York, promising to change the state’s political culture and work to ensure that New Yorkers believe in their government again. Hochul, a Democrat from Buffalo who turns 63 this week, officially became New York state’s 57th governor in a private ceremony. Hochul, who was sworn-in by the state’s highest judge, takes over the governor’s office in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal that drove her predecessor, Andrew Cuomo, from power. Cuomo had on August 10 resigned because of a sexual harassment scandal that crippled his administration and that the resignation would take effect after two weeks, which is August 24. The new governor pledged to strengthen the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and speed direct aid to residents in need.  She promised that “changing the culture of Albany” would be a top priority.

Actress Destiny Etiko and colleagues have been involved in a car accident on the way back from their deceased’s colleague, Stanley Okoro’s burial. Stanley Okoro, who was popularly known for his comedy roles in movies, died on Wednesday, August 11 from a suspected case of food poisoning. A candlelight service was held for the deceased on Tuesday and he was laid to rest Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State. Although the car was badly damaged on the right side of it, all occupants came out unhurt. Etiko, who shared a video of the damaged car, wrote: “We are just coming back from our colleague’s burial and this is what happened.   “We thank God nobody died but the car was badly damaged.”

Seven members of a family have died after eating suya with juice in Umueze Umuakanu Umuahia North LGA, Abia State. The suya was bought by the father, Mr. Jessey, ABN TV reports. His family members, including extended family members who were visiting, joined to eat the suya. They were said to have started throwing up after eating the suya. 7 of the family members died while the wife, Mrs Ogba Jessey, and the son survived. Mrs Ogba Jessey, who is still not aware that her family members have passed on, is currently receiving treatment at Federal Medical Centre Umuahia alongside her son.  The dead family members have been deposited in the morgue.

Nigerian striker, Anthony Nwakaeme has been honoured with a huge statue in Turkey for his impressive contributions at Super Lig side Trabzonspor.  The 32-year-old, who joined the Turkish club from Hapoel Be'er Sheva in 2018, has made over 90 appearances for club, with over 20 goals to his name. Nigerian football journalist Oluwashina Okeleji shared the news on his social media platform adding that the image was erected in Trabzon by Adem Birsen.      Speaking about the statue,  Adem Birsen said, " We wanted to make a bust of Nwakaeme, we wanted the very intelligent man to identify with Trabzon. We made it with the cap of our legendary name Ahmet Suat Özyazc?. It was a long construction process in 5-6 months. We had it done with a special sculptor. We love and admire him very much. If Fenerbahçe has Alex, we have Nwakaeme. We love him very much, he should continue to score, he is our everything."
